process of trust. Sovana, a young and cautious monkey, has been reluctant to join the Amber Group, a close-knit troop of monkeys living and growing together under the sanctuary’s care. For weeks, caretakers have gently tried to integrate Sovana into this group, but the shy monkey’s heart remains hesitant.
At the center of this effort is Bunita, a nurturing and experienced female monkey within the Amber Group. Known for her gentle nature and motherly instincts, Bunita seems to have taken a special interest in Sovana. Day after day, she reaches out with soft hands and warm eyes, trying to welcome Sovana into the fold. She grooms near her, offers her food, and even gently tugs at her hand—an invitation to come closer, to trust, to belong.
But Sovana doesn’t move.
Despite Bunita’s kindness, Sovana often pulls away, retreating to her corner or clinging to the fence as if the safety of solitude is all she knows. It’s not aggression that holds her back—it’s fear. The sanctuary staff believe Sovana may have come from a traumatic background, making it difficult for her to accept even the most sincere gestures of care.
Still, Bunita doesn’t give up. Again and again, she tries. In the morning, she approaches with a piece of banana. In the afternoon, she gently pats the ground beside her, encouraging Sovana to sit. And sometimes—just sometimes—Sovana takes one step closer.
These small steps are victories.
On one emotional afternoon, Sovana reached out and briefly touched Bunita’s arm. It lasted only a moment, but for the caretakers and Bunita alike, it felt like a breakthrough. The entire Amber Group, curious but respectful, watched from nearby. They had accepted Bunita’s mission and knew that Sovana needed time.
Bunita’s persistence is inspiring. She acts not out of obligation, but out of understanding. She, too, was once new, afraid, unsure of her place. Now, she’s offering Sovana what was once offered to her: a second chance, a place to heal, and the comfort of family.
The journey is far from over. Sovana still spends much of her day alone, observing, thinking, watching. But her eyes follow Bunita more closely now. Her body relaxes a little when the group is near. She may not be ready to fully join them yet—but she’s learning. And the love she’s receiving, especially from Bunita, is slowly breaking down the walls around her heart.
